GENESIS Professional Organizers - Play Room / Toy Room / Children's Room

Play Room / Toy Room / Children's Room
GENESIS Professional Organizers can organize a play room, game room, toy room or child's room to better accommodate the uses, activities and appearance of the space. The room you see below was transformed over the span of one “girl’s weekend” via the hard work and talents of five women (two professional organizers included). A total of $500 in supplies and lots of elbow grease made a huge difference in the living arrangements of one young Dallas family.

Children's Playroom

The problem with the room was that its odd pie shape and one complete wall of windows made furniture placement and storage a problem. Two walls of the room are brick (previously exterior walls), and the third wall contains aluminum-cased windows and a back door.

Small Changes Made a Big Impact

Once the room was cleared out it was painted, the carpet was steam cleaned, and new drapes were sewn for each window section. The slip cover was removed from the couch and the color scheme was built around the existing plaid pattern. Two bulletin boards were placed on the wall, one to showcase each child’s rotating arts and crafts projects.

Rearranging the Furniture

The couch was moved against the brick wall and a children’s toy storage set of three pieces with corresponding storage bins was purchased at a local Big Box Store. The remaining toys were moved to the bins in front of the windows. The kitchen play set was moved to the other brick wall so it is not the first thing you see when entering the room. A child-size work/play table was also brought from the son’s room into the playroom.

Pairing Down is Important

The homeowner did an excellent job of discarding numerous toys that her children had outgrown or lost interest in. Some toys were donated to local charities and younger family members. While other broken ones were discarded. Two pieces of furniture, a writing secretary and another large leather chair/ottoman, were also removed from the space. The room now contains furniture for both little people and adults.

How to keep it clean?

Since the children of this house cannot yet read, we had to be creative with the “labeling” system. Pictures were taken of each bin with the specific toys that “lived” there. The idea is that the children will be able to play “match-game” when cleaning their playroom – placing each toy in the bin with a corresponding picture.
